About 100 teachers and students attended the Prove It! Competition awards ceremony at 9am last Saturday, 23 Mar 2013.
The winners of the Infographics segment of the competition received their prizes from Mr Gene Tan (Director, National Library), while Mrs Koh-Kiang Lai Lin (Director, Reading Initiatives) gave out the second and third prizes for the Regional round of the Research Challenge.
The top teams from the Regional round and the top 3 teams in the Finals received their respective awards from Mrs Elaine Ng, Chief Executive Officer of the National Library Board.
In her speech, Mrs Ng underscored the importance of Information Literacy in a fast-paced, hyper-connected world where information is readily accessible, and where massive amounts of information and data are being generated daily. She also took the opportunity to announce the upcoming Information Literacy awareness campaign which will use simple catchphrases like S.U.R.E. - which stands for Source, Understand, Research and Evaluate – so that the man on the street can better understand Information Literacy.
The ceremony concluded with light refreshments for all guests.

The NLB PROVE IT! Competition is an inter-school competition that aims to make learning fun and challenge students’ ability to seek information and develop a strong aptitude for research.
The Regional rounds were on Monday, 18 Mar 2013, and concurrent sessions were held at Tampines Regional Library (Eastern Region), Jurong Regional Library (Western Region), Woodlands Regional Library (Northern Region)and Bishan Public Library (Central Region), to ensure that each of the 63 teams had reasonable access to library resources. Each region would have 3 winners that will move on to the Finals on Friday, 22 Mar 2013.
Students worked in teams of three to answer 30 research questions within an hour. The questions were based on a variety of topics. For example:
Apart from attempting to answer each and every question, the students had to PROVE each correct answer (1 point) by using at least two of types of information sources: a credible website (2 points), NLB’s electronic resources (3 points) or a print resource (4 points) from the hosting library’s collection. Each of these were covered in detail during the information literacy training sessions held on the first week of Mar 2013.
There was intense competition amongst the teams of students, and the librarians marshalling the events observed a variety of tactics employed by the teams. For instance, some teams relied more heavily on non-print resources to answer more questions (thus foregoing the 4 points for print resources), while others preferred a holistic approach for each question (thus risking the ability to complete all 30 questions). Some teams stayed together while others split the answer booklets into 3 parts to cover more ground. To their credit, no team was disqualified for breaking the rules (e.g cheating, misplacing or hogging of books, late submission).
The list of 12 regional winners are posted HERE.
Check out the photos of the teams in action below:
